Attila Vigh Ph.D. was born in 1977 in Budapest, Hungary. He graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 2001. He started his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Architecture. It was during the teaching of structural engineering subjects that it became apparent to him that he could bridge architects and engineers. In 2007, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in the approximate calculation of bridges.
He was determined to further apply his talents in industry to gain experience. He believes that to become a truly good academic lecturer, one must be able to share decades of practical experience with students.
In 2007, he took up a position at Főmterv Zrt. In that year, he started the design of the Margaret Bridge renovation, which he accompanied for four years as a structural engineer. He was able to mediate between architect and engineer on several occasions, resulting in many detailed solutions that satisfied both parties. In the following years, he has designed many motorway bridges, as well as many civil engineering structures in Budapest, Hungary. In 2015, he obtained the qualification of bridge and structural engineer.
In 2016, he was given the opportunity to apply his knowledge of bridge aesthetics in-house. From then on, each bridge structure was designed exclusively according to his own ideas. He has successfully convinced the current clients with his richly illustrated presentations, which also serve as a background, taking the project from the conceptual design phase to the realisation. The first bridge built along these lines was a pedestrian-cycle bridge over the Rákos creek, next to the Duna Arena. The second bridge was a road bridge over the River Ipoly on the Slovakian-Hungarian border, in a scenic setting. The third bridge was a uniquely shaped wildlife crossing over the M6 motorway, which, like the previous two bridges, blends in perfectly with its surroundings. In parallel, of course, he has also worked on several other spectacular bridge designs, which have progressed to the conceptual design, approved design and implementation design stage.
He has been teaching continuously since 2001. Initially, he taught the structural courses of the Department of Mechanics, Materials and Structures, and since 2011 he has been teaching the course he created on the Aesthetics of Bridge Design. Within the framework of this course, he introduces students to current trends in bridge design and provides them with new insights. He is keen to promote the design of bridge structures that are not only transit-oriented, but also offer added functionality, create community space, are unique, innovative, minimalist, close to the water surface and not self-serving.
His commitment to unique perspectives and visions can be seen in his architectural-themed photographs, but paragliding also helps him see the world from a different perspective.
